Koleinu | קולנו (‘Our Voice’) – We Are Here: Visibility and Empowerment
Project period: January 2026 – December 2027
Organiser: Hashomer Hatzair Deutschland e.V.
Funded by: Berlin Participation and Integration Programme
About the project
‘Koleinu | קולנו’ (Hebrew: Our Voice) is a two-year project that empowers adult members of the Israeli and Jewish community in Berlin. Many of them experience language barriers, uncertainties in everyday life and – especially since 7 October 2023 – increasing anti-Semitism and social exclusion. The project creates new spaces where people can learn together, exchange ideas and raise their voices.
What we want to achieve
The aim of Koleinu is to promote linguistic and social participation and to strengthen self-confidence and visibility within Berlin society. Participants improve their German language skills, learn to express themselves confidently and develop their own small projects – for example, podcasts, readings or exhibitions. In this way, they themselves become active shapers of social life.
Our formats
The project consists of three interrelated elements:
- Reading circles ‘LeseRäume’: Weekly meetings to read and discuss texts about identity, migration and discrimination.
- Workshops: Practical and creative activities on topics such as rhetoric, writing, storytelling, language and society.
- Action projects: Participants’ own initiatives that are made publicly visible and allow empowerment to be experienced.
What makes us special
Koleinu combines language promotion with empowerment and political education. Language is handled sensitively – also with regard to its emotional significance for many Jewish and Israeli participants. The project promotes a community of solidarity in which everyone is heard. Hybrid formats also enable people with limited mobility or those outside Berlin to participate.
Long-term impact
After the project is completed, the groups and networks that have been created will continue to exist. Many participants become active themselves, continuing formats on a voluntary basis or contributing their ideas to the community. Koleinu thus creates sustainable structures for encounter, visibility and mutual support.
