Who are we?
Hashomer Hatzair is the international, left Jewish youth movement in Germany promoting social justice, solidarity and dialogue through non-formal education. Re-established in Germany more than a decade ago, we are built on one core principle: youth autonomy.
We empower young people to shape their communities by organising activities, seminars and camps. Our activity center, Ken Berlin, runs programs throughout the year.
“Machane” means summer camp in Hebrew.
Sommermachane is a space where children and teenagers can express themselves freely, build lifelong friendships, and explore Jewish, social and political topics through experiential education.
The camp takes place at a campsite surrounded by nature, with space for outdoor activities, creative projects, educational workshops and time at the lake.
Who are we looking for?
We are looking for a motivated, diverse team with different backgrounds, skills and experiences. Most importantly: you are excited to help create a meaningful and unforgettable Sommermachane together with us.
🔹 Educational Team (Ages 16–18)
You are part of the pedagogical team and take active responsibility for the educational program.
As part of the Educational Team, you:
- Plan and facilitate workshops and group activities
- Accompany and support a group of participants
- Take educational responsibility during the entire camp
- Work closely with the coordinator and the full team
- Help shape the political, social and Jewish content of the Machane
Requirements:
- Age 16–18
- Full availability during the entire Sommermachane period
10–22 July 2026 (including preparation and follow-up days)
- Mandatory participation in both preparation weekends:
- 17–19 April 2026
- 12–14 June 2026
This role requires commitment, reliability and readiness to work intensively as a team.
🔹 Helpers (18+)
Helpers are a crucial part of the Machane and support the camp organizationally, logistically and practically.
This role is open to anyone 18 years and older who would like to contribute to making the Sommermachane possible.
Possible areas of support include:
- Kitchen team
- Logistics & infrastructure
- Evening programs
- Excursions
- Technical support
- Social media & documentation
- Awareness structures & emotional support
- Flexible support wherever needed
You do not need prior experience in youth work — motivation, responsibility and team spirit are what matter most.
Availability
Helpers should ideally be available during:
Approx. 9–22 July 2026 (including preparation and follow-up days).
In certain situations, partial participation is possible (first or second half of the Sommermachane).
Please apply even if your availability is specific or limited — we will try to find a solution together.
Helpers are warmly invited and encouraged to join the preparation weekend on 12–14 June 2026.
We can support travel arrangements of helpers coming from Israel & other places in Germany. Contact us for more details.
Internship Opportunity
It is possible (and welcome!) to complete a one- to three-month internship at Hashomer Hatzair Germany before the Sommermachane.
During the internship, you gain insight into our educational work, youth organizing and project coordination, and support both the educational and organizational preparation of the Machane.
