Bar/Bat Mitzvah Project – Expression of Interest

Steps into adulthood – Secular Bar*Bat Mitzvah Project

Are you between 12 and 14 years old and would like to explore questions about identity, responsibility and growing up together with other Jewish young people?

In the project ‘Steps into Adulthood’, you will meet regularly over several months with a group of peers from Berlin. Together, you will explore topics such as Jewish tradition, personal development and community and discover how all of this relates to your own life.

In approximately 6-8 meetings, you will, among other things:

  • talk about identity and growing up
  • learn about the meaning of mitzvah – good deeds and responsibility
  • find out more about your family history
  • discover Jewish life and history in Berlin
  • learn about various rites of passage and bar and bat mitzvah traditions
  • plan and implement a community project together

You will also work together to create a brochure in which you record your thoughts, experiences and findings. At the end, you will organise a celebration that you help to develop yourselves.
