What did it mean to be gay in a Kibbutz during the formative decades of Israeli society? How did Hashomer Hatzair’s educational ideals shape conversations around sexuality, identity, and community?
In this lecture, historian Dotan Brom explores the little-known queer history of Hashomer Hatzair through the remarkable life of Giora Manor (1926–2005), one of Israel’s leading dance critics and a lifelong member of Kibbutz Mishmar HaEmek.
Drawing on archival research, memoirs, and oral history interviews, the lecture examines what it meant to be a gay man in the Kibbutz from the 1940s through the 1990s. At its core is the concept of the „transparent closet“ – a social reality in which homosexuality was often widely known but rarely acknowledged openly.
The lecture also traces the evolution of attitudes toward sexuality within Hashomer Hatzair’s youth movement and educational institutions, including the development of sex education in HaKibbutz HaArtzi (the Kibbutz Artzi Federation, the nationwide federation of Hashomer Hatzair Kibbutzim) and its intellectual connections to psychoanalysis through the work of Shmuel Golan, who trained in Berlin.
By weaving together personal stories with broader historical developments, the lecture offers a fresh perspective on Hashomer Hatzair’s educational ideals, everyday social life, and the history of sexuality within the movement.
